While there are plenty of beautiful places to visit in India, Udaipur is one of my personal favorites. While certainly showing its age (much of the city dates from the 16th century, after all), Udaipur is a beautiful place built around a handful of lakes and surrounded by dramatic mountains. Owing to its historic city center and dramatic scenery, Udaipur has served as the setting for a number of Hollywood and Bollywood movies, most notably the Prem Ratan Dhan Payo movie.

Talking to locals in the city center was one of our favorite things to do in Udaipur. There’s something about the relaxed atmosphere that makes chatting up local residents really easy. The touts here are just not as pushy, which is a big relief after our experiences in other cities where we were bombarded with questions at every corner.

The city of lakes is famous for its astonishing architecture, palaces and temples. These cities were built during the reign of different kings to impress their guests. Udaipur has been a popular tourist attraction ever since its inception as a planned city by Maharana Udai Singh. People say a lot of great things about Udaipur. So many in fact, it’s hard to know what to expect when you arrive.
